21st Century After School program Receives Grant from Best Buy Foundation

Ashleigh Maas, Operations Supervisor at Best Buy Fort Gratiot, and members of the store's team, presented Central Middle School's FIRST Tech Challenge team, Team 9861, the Cavalier Cougars, with a $7,000 grant from the Best Buy Foundation.

Funds will be used to provide the team with the tools and technology necessary to compete in Michigan's growing FTC program. Team 9861 is Port Huron School's first-ever FTC team.

The team is a function of the schools Horizon's 21st Century After School Program, the Roar Zone, and is comprised of students in seventh and eighth grades.

The team is mentored by after-school program staff Susan Repp and Catherine Schlaufmann, as well as Berant Perry, a senior at Port Huron Northern and Connor Jawor, an eighth-grader at Fort Gratiot Middle School. Berant and Connor are members of FIRST Robotics Team 3667, the Mecanum Knights. The team will work out of Central Middle School.
