The student recognitions are finally back at our monthly Board of Education meetings! at tonight's meeting, Superintendent Kerhoulas recognized the PHHS Thunderbirds!
Last month during my report to the board, my theme was “It’s Time” to once again play offense as a District. For my office in particular, it’s time to begin publicly honoring our staff and students who do incredible work and are worthy of recognition by the Board. During the pandemic we tried a few times to recognize worthy staff members, but the necessary restrictions at the time - such as having to come alone with no family or friend support - took away from the full honor they deserved.
So tonight, it’s time. It’s time to honor a group of individuals who have worked hard and accomplished much - and they have a whole group of supporters here with them - over 30! At this time, I’d like to invite the PHHS Thunderbirds and their coaches to the podium. Would you please join me in a round of applause for the PHHS Thunderbirds - the 2022 State Pom Champions!
When recommending the PHHS Thunderbirds for board recognition, PHHS Principal Mike Palmer shared the following:
"The students and coaches have worked very hard and we are proud of their
accomplishments. Coach Kania approached us several years ago about
rebuilding the Thunderbird team. Throughout the pandemic she continued to
work with them. It's been a dramatic growth over the past three years in both
the size of the team and their ability. Great job team!"
The PHHS Thunderbirds dance team has been in existence since 1970. This year the team performed at Victory Day, football games, basketball halftime shows, the homecoming parade, Big Reds Believe, The Cheer/Dance Showcase at PHHS, the PH Invitational (which they hosted), and competed in the Michigan State Championship Competition sanctioned by Showcase America. The team earned 1st Place in the Pom Division, making them the 2022 State Champs in Pom, and 2nd in Hip Hop.
Each of the Thunderbirds team members, coaches, and team managers will be
receiving a movie pass from Sperry’s Moviehouse along with a free ticket to an
upcoming Port Huron Prowlers game. We will give these to Mrs. Kania to distribute to the team. Additionally, we have a special presentation to the team from Insurance Specialists Agency in Marysville, our local MEEMIC agent. At this time, I’m going to invite Mrs. Brenda Johnston to join the team and ask the three team captains - Nyla McDuffie, Savanna Samons, and Keeley Swoffer to step forward to accept this gift on behalf of the team.
When honoring a group or team, our MEEMIC agents have historically rewarded the team with an item to congratulate them and to be used by future generations. In speaking with Coach Kania, they became aware of the need for new poms for the entire team, and they immediately stepped forward to purchase them. Mrs. Johnston has a box with 30 news poms for the team, and will present a few to the team captains at this time.

2022 PHIL WILLARD MEMORIAL CHESS TOURNAMENT RESULTS
The Port Huron Schools Phil Willard Memorial Chess Tournament was held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Port Huron High School. 65 students participated in the tournament.
The 1st place winners in each grade received a trophy, and are as follows:
